Spark creation and propagation in pneumatic and mechanical conveyor systems that transport combustible materials can lead to serious fires and filter dust explosions. Spark propagation is usually caused by processing machines or impurities in the materials used. This can result in loss of production, serious damage to property and danger to human life. In order to eliminate such risks, pneumatic and mechanical conveyor systems have to be monitored for sparks and protected by spark extinguishing systems. These spark detection systems are also categorised as active explosion prevention systems. They should not be considered as explosion protection systems - Explosion protection systems act after an explosion has occured. Explosion prevention systems act to prevent an explosion from occurring by minimising the risk of ignition of a combustible dust cloud.
The T and B Electronic spark detection and extinguishing system consists of "state of the art" technology. Highly sensitive electronic spark detectors monitor pneumatic and mechanical conveyor systems continually and send a signal to the spark alarm unit immediately upon detection of any sparks. Within milli-seconds, the alarm unit then actuates the water extinguishing system, the emmergency shutdown or the CO2 extinguishing system. In some cases powder can be used. In the case of a water extinguishing system, high water pressure greater than 7 barg is used to create finely atomised water
spray in the suction pipe. The sparks must pass this curtain of water, where they are extinguished reliably and quickly.
A variety of spark and ember detectors are used depending upon the application. Ember detectors usually use a lead sulfide cell while spark detectors have a silicone photocell or a lead sulfide cell. T and B Electronic also provides fiber optic spark detectors for high process temperature applications.
