Explosion vents are commonly installed in high explosion risk zones such as filters or dust collectors/bag-houses, cyclones, silos, bins, hoppers, duct work, dryers, sifters etc. This is because a combustible dust cloud can be generated, and in combination with enough oxygen and an ignition source , a dust explosion can occur.

Explosion vents allow for the minimisation of combustion in the vented enclosure. However, they do not provide the total solution of explosion protection. Considerations such as explosion isolation due to possible flame propagation need to also be considered.

In this application , Brilex type KE explosion vents are strategically placed in ductwork. To minimise the possibility for a deflagration to turn into a detonation. By staggering explosion vents along duct work, this could be an effective means of protecting downstram equipment. Experts should be contacted to assist in the design as this setup allows the flame to continue to accelerate downstream.
